Can physical therapy help meniscus tears?

The short answer is yes, of course! However, there are some caveats. Meniscus tears can be acute - from a sports injury or they can be degenerative from age related wear and tear. Whether a meniscus tear can heal without surgical intervention depends on the size and location of the tear. The outer portion of the meniscus has a rich blood supply while the inner zone does not. Physical therapy can help by prescribing the right exercises to decrease irritation to the tissue so you can stay strong and as active as possible while also providing education regarding prognosis. At the very least trying 6-8 weeks of therapy is a safe and conservative option before exploring medication or surgery. Reach out today if we can help!
